Membership in the Oregon Trail Havanese Club obligates the member to the following code of ethics:
1. Every breeding will be done from the standpoint of bettering the breed. Only Havanese that are physically and temperamentally sound will be used for breeding. No Havanese will be used for breeding if it is known to be affected with Juvenile Cataracts, PRA, heart disease or any other heritable condition which affects the health of the progeny. No two Havanese that are carriers of Juvenile Cataracts, PRA, heart disease or any other heritable condition that affects the health of the progey shall be bred together. Havanese which repeatedly produce affected offspring should be removed from the breeding program, and their offspring should not be used for breeding.
2. Members of the OTHC will consider the health and welfare of the breed when engaged in owning, breeding, exhibiting, placing or selling Havanese.
3. No Havanese will be offered as a raffle or contest prize or in any auction or giveaway.
4. Havanese shall not be placed on display for the sole purpose of sale nor will they be sold to pet brokers,
wholesalers, dealers, or pet shops.
5. All Havanese shall be tested annually for genetic eye conditions not later then one (1) year of age, and the results subxnitted to the Canine Eye Registry Foundation(CERF) testing will continue until animal is eight years of age.
6. Breeders are encourages to use a contract which clearly states all conditions of sale. Contracts should be as concise as possible. Contracts concerning show puppies between an established breeder and a new owner should benefit both parties. Breeders should refrain from taking advantage of new breeders in regards to onerous (burdensome or oppressive) co-ownerships, inclusive of multiple or whole litter puppy-back
contracts.
7. Members will conduct themselves at all times in am ethical manner. Engaging in gossip, slander, hearsay or innuendo which is harmful to another member or their animal will not be tolerated.
8. Members will at all time treat others with respect and shall assist, support, educate, and nurture each other in their goals of owning, breeding, and br exhibiting Havanese.
